Antique Chinese Snuff Bottle Carved Glass Auspicious Qing Dynasty China 19th C
Auctions is very pleased to offer a superb antique Chinese snuff bottle. Were used by the Chinese during the Qing Dynasty to contain powdered tobacco. Smoking tobacco was illegal during this time, but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders. Therefore, snuff was carried in a small bottle like other medicines. Snuff bottles were initially made for the emperor and the court, and were eventually produced in much greater quantities for a public who enjoyed their functionality as well as symbols of status and exquisite miniature works of art. These exquisite objects not only illustrated the technical virtuosity of Qing dynasty craftsmen, but also provide a window on life and culture in late imperial China. Different mediums such as jade and glass illustrate the relationships between craftsmen working at the imperial workshops, and the favored motifs across these and other materials. As in all Chinese arts and crafts, motifs and symbols play an important part in decorative detail. Symbols are derived from a multitude of sources such as legends, history, religion, philosophy and superstition. The ideas used are almost always directed toward bringing wealth, health, good luck, longevity, even immortality to the owner of an artifact, frequently as a wish expressed in a kind of coded form by the giver of a gift. Is made from carved glass and depicts a standing male figure. It measures 1.5 inches in width by 1.25 inches in depth by 2.5 inches in height (3.81 cm by 3.17 cm by 6.35 cm). It is in very good condition and shows wear consistent with a dating to the late 19th century. A fabulous collectors item, it is guaranteed authentic and would make a fine addition to any collection of Chinese art. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting that we have been delivering in-person to collectors across the Globe at Primitive in Chicago.
