This marvelously carved cameo glass master snuff bottle goes from a layer of eggplant purple glass that is carved from the thick heavier colored layer to thin translucent areas along the edges. The body of the piece is carved to resemble the full body of a Qilin mythological chimerical creature with vexing eyes, gaping mouth, horns, articulated mane and tail. Even the stubby little legs and claws are carved on the reverse side. On the upper side hexagonal scales are etched into the clear gold backed glass. Because of its size the piece feels wonderfully smooth and tactile in the hands. It is 4.75″ long x 3.25 ” wide x 1.75 thick. I can find no damage on this wonderful piece. It is fitted with a later red amber or lucite stopper I believe it dates to the late Qing Dynasty c.
