AN EXCEPTIONAL EMERALD-GREEN OVERLAY PEKING GLASS PHOENIX SNUFF BOTTLE QING DYNASTY. Early to mid 19th Century, Green Overlay Glass Snuff Bottle. This is a very rare and fine, flattened, circular form, with a round elongated neck, over a raised oval footing, snuff bottle. It is covered with a rich green overlay glass on white snowflake glass, decorated with a fine relief carving of a clump of Bamboo and a standing Phoenix encircling the bottle. It comes with an incredibly rare carved “Dragon”motif Coral and Jade stopper with a natural material spoon. The bottle is in remarkable and excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos. Snuff bottles originally served to contain medicine in the Song and Yuan dynasties; in the Qing dynasty they became popular for tobacco consumption. Emperor Qianlong’s grandfather, Kangxi, set up glass workshops for the imperial court, as well as for middle-class consumers and the export market around the year 1680. They specialized in producing opaque glassware laminated in contrasting colored patterns, which are incised into the surface, as we see in this example. Defines cameo glass as: Glass made of two or more layers of glass of different colors. During manufacture, the primary layer is covered with one or more layers of contrasting color, usually by encasing. The outer layers are carved, cut, engraved, sandblasted or acid etched to produce a design in relief, and the primary layer serves are the background color for the design. It’s subject matter, of a majestic. Emblematic of the Empress herself, strongly points to it being commissioned for or given to a high ranking female at the Imperial court.
