The main scene uses the natural section of black to represent the Immortal Zhang Guolao in the story of’The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea’. It shows the hero being sprayed by dark ink from a giant octopus. The carving is beautifully executed, making the finest snuff bottle we have ever handled. The bottle is topped by the stopper of orange stone, possibly Carnelian. The collar is made of bronze with a small spoon to extract the snuff from the container. Snuff bottles made in white agate with sculpted veined brown adornment and the best carvings are amongst the most sought after by collectors. Cabinet snuff bottles are larger and rarer than the travelling type. Agate is the most translucent form of quartz and is microcrystalline in nature. It is known for its brightness, hardness and is available in many colours. The artist’s skill is to use the distinctive markings in the stone in order to accentuate the carving.
